Heel and Toe
What is it? Why do you do it?
Heel and toe involves operating the brake and throttle with the right foot simultaneously, leaving the left foot free to operate the clutch. The ball of the right foot is used to brake, and either the edge or heel of the right foot (depending on pedal positions) is used to blip the throttle.
The technique is used when braking and downshifting.
Reasons for doing this are ...
- Blipping the throttle before selecting a lower gear prevents the engine locking the rear wheels and/or unsettling the car.
- Blipping the throttle before selecting a lower gear helps to keep the engine in the power band (especially useful for turbocharged cars)
